Human Rights Watch was founded in 1978 as “Helsinki Watch,” investigating rights abuses in countries that signed the Helsinki Accords. Currently, HRW investigates massacres, genocides, government take-overs of media and the arrests of activists and political opposition figures, as well as abuses and discrimination against women, LGBT people, and people with disabilities.
